FAQs

  • What is Gold Vermeil?

Gold Vermeil (pronounced ‘ver-may’) is a technique that involves plating Fine or Sterling Silver with a layer of Gold. For jewellery to be considered Gold Vermeil in the US, the Gold used has to be at least 10 karats and 2.5 microns thick.
All of Curious Curator’s Gold Vermeil jewellery has Sterling Silver (92.5% pure Silver and 7.5% other materials) as its base material and is plated with 14k Gold or Rhodium at a thickness of 2.5 microns.
Please consider that different countries have varying standards and other gold vermeil jewellery may be plated at a lower thickness, which explains the price & quality.

  • What are the benefits of Gold Vermeil vs Gold Plated jewellery?

Gold Plated jewellery involves applying a thin layer of gold (usually 0.5 microns or less) on top of a less valuable metal, such as brass & copper. As a result, although Gold Plating is more affordable, it is far less durable than Gold Vermeil.
If you are allergic to some metals, Gold Vermeil is also perfect due to the durability of the Gold combined with the hypoallergenic Sterling Silver base.

  • What is Curious Curator’s Silver jewellery plated with?
Likewise with our Gold Vermeil jewellery, our Silver jewellery has 925 Sterling Silver as its base material and is plated with Rhodium at a thickness of also 2.5 microns.
Rhodium is a precious metal and is actually priced much higher than Gold or Silver. It is often used as a protective coating on jewellery to protect from scratches and tarnish.
